Place Garibaldi is one of the oldest and the largest squares in Nice. It was designed by Antonio Spinelli in the second half of the 18th century. It is not a fully pedestrianized area, since it is crossed by a tramline and it sits on the junction of several important thoroughfares of Nice (Boulevard Jean Jaures, Avenue de la Republique, Rue Cassini and Rue Catherine Segurane), but it undoubtedly represents a tourist sight in itself.

Administratively speaking, it pertains to the district of Port de Nice, but most of the attractions in Vieux Nice are at hand too (such as the Chapel of the Holy Sepulcher, Café de Turin and, why not, the National Theater). The square is bordered by beautiful baroque arcaded buildings, and its center used to be pegged out by a statue of Garibaldi. The monument had to be moved several meters away from its original emplacement in 2007 when certain restoration works were being carried out in view of enhancing the traffic infrastructure of the square.
